Mario Lanza a sette anni di età suonò per 27 volte di seguito un disco di Caruso. Questo fatto convinse i genitori che il loro unico figlio era destinato
a raggiungere alte vette nel campo musicale. Questo «record di resistenza » riguardo ai dischi di Caruso fu conseguito a South Philadelphia, la
Little Italy della città quacchera, in cui Mario era nato.
Uno dei più grandi piaceri di suo padre era, ascoltare la sua bella collezione di dischi di Caruso. In innumerevoli serate egli e suo figlio sedettero
fianco a fianco elettrizzati dalla voce del grande tenore.
Quando Lanza ebbe ventun'anni la' sua insegnante di canto, Irene Williams, gli diede la notizia che egli era stato prescelto per un audizione con
Serge Koussevitsky, direttole d'orchestra alla Philadelphia Academy of Music. L'audizione gli fece ottenere una borsa di studio per il Festival
Musicale di Tanglewood 1942, dove lo udirono i critici newyorkesi il cui consenso si espresse nell'affermazione che avevano ascoltato il più grande
tenore dai tempi di Caruso.
Alcuni anni or sono, Lanza, divenuto ormai un celebre cantante e avendo anche debuttato sullo schermo in due film, ebbe un successo mondiale
come protagonista de «Il grande Caruso », una versione filmata della vita di Caruso, in cui interpretava il ruolo dell'immortale tenore napoletano la
cui voce e la cui carriera tanto lo avevano ispirato.
Enrico Caruso ebbe sempre nel cuore la sua città natale e fu indimenticabile interprete delle più belle canzoni napoletane, che fece conoscere e
amare a tutto il mondo. Purtroppo di lui non ci restano che delle vecchie incisioni che non possono non risentire del molto tempo trascorso e del
confronto con i prodotti di una tecnica più perfezionata.
Mario Lanza, emulo ed erede di Caruso, è l'artista più adatto a ripresentarci in una incisione perfetta le più celebri melodie napoletane eseguite con

When Lanza turned 21, his vocal teacher, Irene Williams, notified him that he had been tapped to audition for Dr. Serge Koussevitsky, conductor
at Philadelphia's Academy of Music. The audition won him a scholarship to the 1942 music festival at Tanglewood, where he was heard by New
York critics whose consensus was that the greatest tenor since Caruso had been heard.
Some years ago, the distinguished singer and movie-star Mario Lanza (he had made his screen debut in two pictures) had a world-wide success
featuring in " The Great Caruso ", a filmed version of Caruso's life, in which he played the role of the immortal neapolitan tenor whose voice and
career so inspired him.
