FERRUCCIO TAGLIAVINI - SONGS MY FATHER SANG
.......THE SWEETNESS OF ITALIAN SONGS, THE
RICH VOICE OF A GREAT TENOR......
FERRUCCIO TAGLIAVINI, FOR MANY YEARS A MAINSTAY OF LA SCALA, WHO HAS
SUNG LEADING ROLES AT VIRTUALLY EVERY GREAT OPERA HOUSE IN THE WORLD,
HERE LENDS HIS MAGNIFICENTLY LIQUID VOICE TO THE POPULAR SONGS OF
NAPLES. IN DOING SO, HE FOLLOWS A TRADITION OF MANY GREAT ITALIAN
TENORS.
CARUSO, FOR INSTANCE, EVEN AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS FAME, STILL LIKED TO
SING THOSE EXUBERANTLY MELODIC STREET SONGS OF HIS NATIVE NAPLES. OVER
THE YEARS, HIS RECORDING OF 0 SOLE NTIO HAS PROBABLY BEEN HEARD BY MORE
PEOPLE THAN ANY OTHER SINGLE PERFORMANCE IN THE WHOLE HISTORY OF MUSIC.
LATER, IN THE EARLY DAYS OF RADIO, BENIAMINO GIGLI WOULD TAKE AN
OCCASIONAL BREATHER FROM LA SCALA TO SING NEAPOLITAN SONGS ON THE AIR.
ON SUCH OCCASIONS, LISTENERS ALL OVER EUROPE WERE TWIRLING DIALS IN
HOPES OF CATCHING AN ITALIAN STATION.
TAGLIAVINI, TOO, HAS RETAINED THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE A DEEP PERSONAL BOND
WITH THE POPULAR MUSIC OF HIS LAND. AFTER ALL, IT WAS THE MELTING
MELODIC RICHNESS OF ITALIAN SONG THAT GAVE RISE TO THE WHOLE OPERATIC
TRADITION OF BEL CANTO.
WHAT DO THE SONGS SAY? THEY SPEAK OF THE USUAL ROMANTIC CONCERNS—LOVE,
PASSION, JEALOUSY, THE MOONLIT SEA, AND BRIGHT PASSING FANCIES. BUT WHAT
THE SONGS SAY ISN'T AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT THEY SUGGEST: THE SOFT
MEDITERRANEAN AIR, THE DEEP COLOURS OF THE SKY, THE LUMINOUS SEA AND ITS
GOLDEN SHORES—THE ENTIRE SUNLIT SPELL OF NAPLES SEEMS CAPTURED BY THESE
SONGS. VITALITY AND SOFTNESS BLEND IN THEM, THEIR FLOWING MELODIES AND
GENTLE LILT RECALL THAT ROMANTIC AURA THAT HAS DRAWN ENRAPTURED VISITORS
TO ITALY SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL.ALL THE SONGS ON THIS RECORD STEM FROM
THE YEARS BETWEEN 1910 AND 1940—NOT A HAPPY TIME IN ITALY. BUT HARD
TIMES WERE MADE A LITTLE LIGHTER FOR NEAPOLITANS BY SUCH POPULAR
COMPOSERS AS LAMA, RULLI, BIXIO AND GILL WHO FILLED THE SONGS OF THOSE
TIMES WITH CHARM AND MELODY AND A FEELING OF TENDERNESS. TO MANY OLDER
ITALIANS WHO LIVED THROUGH THIS ERA, THESE SONGS ARE HAPPY MEMORIES OF
THEIR YOUTH.
