DI IERI The sight of the nonplussed elder, cowering away from the piercing yells of the modern singers is so common a thing that there are even cartoons and jokes about it. The tremendous change that has taken place in the field of Italian pop music during the last five years, has been too much for the older generation and, for them, the thought of settling down to enjoy the new music has been nigh impossible. The enemy... has laid siege everywhere, so that it is no longer possible to squat on a bar stool to sip one's coffee in tranquillity or dab at an ice cream in silent contentment. Today we must also face the blare of the jukebox, strenuously emitting from a corner of the room the latest screeches of some talent or other. We consider ourselves fortunate if the cinema down the street possesses only one loudspeaker in the hall, and let us thank the Muses if nobody has yet thought of showing a rock ' n ' roll film on stereophonic sound. At home there is bound to be the neighbour who will raise the volume of his high-powered radio or television set, earnestly seeking to inculcate his less fortunate fellow-citizens, some appreciation for a singer's "touch." But if a section of the listening public of today encourages modern singers in their earsplitting efforts, there are those who still prefer the songs of yesterday. Funnily enough, in spite of the craze with the new styles, this last group can count with new members every day. The fact is that many of us expect an 'oldie' to be sung better with the new style of singing, when in fact, the older interpretation will always come out as the best. Thus, many of the followers of the new styles, turn back to other singers when they look for a good interpretation of an oldie. One of the most popular singers for the 'oldies' is Ferruccio Tagliavind, who has proved that he, unlike many others, can, and has, extended his popularity over twenty years!! The reason for this should be obvious, since he has that one supreme gift of singers his interpretation is warmly., convincing and above all, it is one hundred percent Italian... Ferruccio Tagliavini was born in Reggio Emilia, on the 14the of May 1914. In 1939 he obtained first placing in a competition organised by the "Maggio Musicale Fiorentino" Committee and in the same year, he made his debut as Rodolfo in Puccini's "Boheme." Since then, Tagliavini has sung in the greatest opera houses of the world and everywhere he has been acclaimed as one of the leading exponents of the bel canto style. Tagliavini's career has developed in a particularly intense period of technological progress. The innovations on the radio, cinema and record industry were all new experiences for the young singer. Tagliavini has been fortunate in this sense, since he has known how to exploit these new means to "make himself heard" throughout the world. To his concerts transmitted over the radio and the recordings he has made, plus his numerous appearances on television, we must add his film work, for there have been many films in which Tagliavini has sung songs like "Voglio vivere cosi" and "Malinconia d'amore." It is therefore not far fetched to say that Ferruccio Tagliavini has put his twenty-one years of experience to good use!...
