Every morning, as Mario walked out into
the sunshine of his garden, he pictured to himself how it would be when
Giovanna came. He looked at the simple hut that was his shelter, at the
bareness of its interior, and realized afresh and with dismay how
undeserving it was to receive her. Yet he was not a poor man, for he
loved his work and trimmed his flowers with the care and imagination of
an artist; and also, because Giovanna had promised him her hand and her
heart forever.
It was toward this day that he worked and saved, for the day when he
could fetch Giovanna and they would begin their life together. Time
passed very slowly and it was hard to gather together enough money to
take a wife, so hard that it was four months before Mario could afford
to buy the bright scarlet shirt he wanted for his wedding ceremony. For
an entire year Mario lived alone and watched his hopes and his garden
grow with anxiety lest the flowers be not beautiful enough to please his
bride. Twelve months long he would whisper to the larkspur as he walked
between the beds every morning, "You must grow straight and high, for so
is Giovanna and thus you will grace her figure as she stands before
you!" To the hedge roses which surrounded the thin walls of the hut he
would say, "Do not let your heads droop so, stand proud and erect, for
Giovanna will soon come, whose eye burns with the pride of her fathers
and whose lips are as red as the reddest of your petals!" As he worked,
Mario often sang the old songs of the land which, if one was to judge
his mood by them, revealed in turn his joy and sadness. In this way the
year passed and the moment came for which he had so long been waiting.
When Mario, dressed in his bright new scarlet shirt, led Giovanna into
the garden, she looked and looked and could not speak, for it was the
most beautiful garden she had ever seen. The larkspur returned her
glance warmly and the blue of their petals blazed in radiant joy; the
hedge roses seemed to be bursting with pride and the small, tidy hut
itself told of the care and love with which it had been tended. As
Giovanna looked around her, she saw the goodness of Mario reflected in
every flower and felt his love as a golden cloak of warmth in the
garden.
The warmth and colour of the garden, the beauty and fire of Giovanna and
the vibrant yearning of Mario's songs: these are the characters which
form the signature of Italian vocal music. They are also the
considerations with which these twelve selections were made, selec¬tions
which aim to capture that blend of light and dark which individualises
and enhances the chioscuro strain of the Italian ballad. The Polydor
'Favourites' series includes selections of French and German mood music.
