Il popolare Inno Valdostano è qui presentato nella versione in «
minore », nella suggestiva armonizzazione che Usuelli fece per la
colonna sonora del film « ITALIA K. z» incisa dal Coro della S.A.T..
La solenne melodia, accompagna il funerale della Guida Puchoz mentre
i compagni lo calano dalle vertiginose pareti del K. 2. |

This folksong of praise from the Aosta Valley is sung in the « minor
keys arrangement which Usuelli harmonized for the sound track of the
film, « ITALIA K z », where it was performed by the S.A.T. Choir.
Its solemn strains were used as background music to the sequence of
the funeral of the Alpine guide, Puchoz, as his companions lowered
his body down the sheer and dizzy face of K. 2. |

Un canto natalizio delle montagne trentine. Lo cantano i ragazzi
della Val di Fiemme il giorno di Natale, chiedendo l'obolo di
casolare in casolare. Uno di essi fa ruotare una stella di carta
lucente in cima ad un palo.
Il canto è di una gioiosa e suggestiva grazia paesana, anche nelle
dolci immagini del testo poetico, che termina con l'augurale Buona
Notte, Buon Natale ! |

A Christmas carol from the mountains of Trent. It is sung by the
children of the Fiemme Valley on Christmas Day as they go from house
to house begging alms. One of them whirls a shiny paper star on the
end of a stick. The carol has a gay and merry rustic charm, to be
found also in the tender imagery of the text which ends with the
farewell greeting : « Good night, Merry Christmas ! » |

È la versione Piemontese sull'antico tema della ragazza da marito
che sceglie tra i vari ammiratori. Qui è il giardiniere ad avere la
meglio sugli altri maneschi pretendenti ! È interessante il paragone
con l'analogo tema friulano « Se jo vés di maridami » presente in
questo stesso disco.
Melodia e ritmica completamente diverse pur avendo in comune un
senso di gioiosa allegrezza, valorizzato dalla splendida
armonizzazione di Michelangeli. |
LA SCELTA FELICE

The Piedmontese version of the age-old story of the marriageable
young girl who chooses from amongst her various admirers. This time
it is the gardener who wins out over the other heavyhanded suiters.
It is interesting to compare this version with the Friulian song
dealing with the same situation, « Se jo vés di maridami », included
on the other side of this same record. Though the melody and rhythm
are completely different, they have in common the same sense of
joyful merriment, highlighted here by Michelangeli's superb
arrangement. |

amore. Curiosa la fantasia della ragazza che vorrebbe farsi

A charming ballad from Trent. The lovelorn Teresina longs to die of
love; she expresses the quaint desire of wanting to be buried in a
grave à trois — but her arithmetic is off for her suitors are four !
An enchantings melody envelops the naiveté of the text in an
atmosphere of lyric grace. |

Una valle Trentina, la Rend.ena, si tramanda di generazione in
generazione il mestiere dell'arrotino. Non vi è contrada del mondo
che questi umili artigiani non abbiano percorsa con il loro
carrettino-mola che trasportano a mano. Questo bel canto è il loro
inno, la loro storia cantata, il richiamo del giovane « moléta » che
si guadagna duramente il suo pane. Canto che sà di nostalgia di
casa, e di vita triste. |

In one of the vallies of Trent, the Rendena, the scissorsgrinder's
trade is banded down from generation to generation. There is no part
of the world these simple artisans have not visited with their
pushcarts and portable grindstones. This lovely song is their
trademark, their tale told in music, the complaint of the young «
moléta » who toils to earn his daily bread, a song telling of
homesickness and a life sorrow. |

Canto popolare ottocentesco, lo cantavano i minatori del traforo del
Gottardo. Sulla stessa aria i soldati della guerra 15-18 raccontano
la loro odissea. TA-PUM è il secco colpo del micidiale fucile, il «
cecchino » lo chiamavano, che decimava le nostre sentinelle. È
veramente un canto tragico e musicalmente assai bello. |
TA-PUM ! (Alpine troop
song)

A 19th century folksong which the workers sang while digging the San
Gottardo Tunnel. During the first World War, the troops picked up
the tune and used it to tell their own tragic tale. TA-PUM came to
represent the sinister cracking of rifles fired by snipers, or «
cecchini » as they were called, who took the lives of countless
Italian sentinels. It is a truly tragic song, of overwhelming
musical effect. |

Questi due canti Trentini sono stati abbinati nelle esecuzioni del
Coro S.A.T. per ovviare alla loro brevità, e anche per qualcosa di
comune nello spirito che li anima, spirito prettamente popolaresco e
vivacissimo. Veri scherzi musicali quali sono, essi si basano
soprattutto sugli effetti sonori dell'interpretazione. |

performance,. both because of their brevity and because they have in

Bellissima e popolare Lauda natalizia Piemontese, testo e melodia
che sono vera poesia e vera musica. La commovente immagine del Bimbo
che gioca con la barba di S. Giuseppe crea un clima di dolce
tenerezza, e l'armonia che l'accompagna completa l'effetto. E stata
elaborata da un maestro di musica popolare : Luigi Pigarelli. |

A captivating and highly popular Christmas Lauda from Piedmont, in
which the words and music are true poetry and true song. The
touching picture of the Infant Jesus playing with Joseph's beard
breeds an atmosphere of gentle sweetness, which effect is sustained
by the harmonic accompaniment. The Lauda has been transcribed and
arranged by a specialist in the field of folk music, Luigi
Pigarelli. |

Ecco il contrapposto Friulano della Piemontese « Scelta felice ».
Eguale il tema della ragazza da marito che passa in rassegna i vari
... partiti. Anche qui ha la peggio il calzolaio, decisamente il più
manesco anche nel Friuli. Interessantissimo l'andamento melodico con
l'eguale, insistente nota del ritornello. La spiritosa
armonizzazione si deve ad Antonio Pedrotti. |
SE JO VES DI MARIDMI
(Friuli) Arranged by A. Pedrotti.
Here is the Friulian equivalent of the Piedmontese song, LA SCELTA
FELICE. Here, too, the story of the marriageable girl who passes in
review her various.... possibilities. And here, too, the one who
comes out the loser is the cobbler, surely the most heavy-handed and
disgruntled cobbler in all of Friuli. The melodic progression is
extremely interesting, with the persistent, unchanging reappearance
of the refrain. The ingenious arrangement is by Antonio Pedrotti. |

Tra i canti degli alpini (Guerra 1915-18) spicca questa stupenda
cosa, vera epopea vissuta e narrata con prodigiosa potenza
evocativa. Nessuno saprà mai dirci quale autentico genio l'abbia
creata e ciò la rende ancora più grande. Un commovente omaggio al
Popolo Soldato che la espresse in uno dei momenti più gravi e più
sentiti della Sua storia. La semplice armonizzazione a quattro voci
è classica. |

Of all the Alpine troop songs from the first World War, this
stupendous ballad is one of the most striking, a veritable epic,
told and experienced with incredible poetic force. Just what genius
— and a great genius he was — wrote it will never be known, which
fact makes it even more stirring. A moving tribute to the Soldier
Nation which gave it birth in one of the most difficult and poignant
moments in its history. The simple four-part arrangement is
extremely classical. |

latino maccheronico veramente spassoso. Vi si commemora Cristoforo

l'allegra melodia a tempo di marcia. |

A comic folk song of praise from Trieste, partly in dialect and
partly in unbelievably funny macaronic Latin. It honors the memory
of Christopher Columbus and the discovery of the new world. The gay,
lively tune in march time is no less amusing. |

Association - Italian Alpine Club)
Higher, higher, still higher ... Just as the joyful soul of Pascoli's
young hero soars to the heavens along with his kite, so man, climbing
the mountains, feels his soul open wide under the magic spell of nature.
He climbs singing; the higher he gets, the more his daily cares and woes
drop away into oblivion, left behind forgotten in another world.
One might almost say that the songs of the S. A. T. Choir exist just in
order to administer this deep sense of peace and calm when to go
mountain climbing and to conquer lofty peaks is a dreamlike
impossibility. It is the mountains, with the enchantment of their
sweet-smelling woods, their barren rocks, their perpetual snows and
majestic glaciers, that loom as the true protagonists of these records.
Even in the cozy warmth of the home, this harmonious group of blended
voices will sweep you to the heights, to the very threshold of a mystery
verging on the sublime.
Which is the same thing everyone felt on one unforgettable April morning
this spring, when the Choir, in the presence of His Holiness John XXIII,
picked up the strains of one of its most moving songs, « Móntagnes
Valdótaines ». The mountain songs, rising so close to heaven, at that
moment drew close to Christ's Vicar on earth, as though heaven and earth
had become one immense celestial kingdom. This new release by the S. A.
T. Choir, in its beauty and perfection, is undoubtedly one of their most
successful efforts and contains, among other things, three hitherto
unpublished songs : «GIROLEMIN », « TA-PUM », « QUATTRO CAVAI CHE
TROTTANO », which fact makes the record even more appealing to all the
friends and fans — including men eminent and illustrious — of the by now
« world-famous » choir which has succeeded in pulling the hidden and
sensitive heartstrings of men who, exhausted by the wear and tear of
modern-day life, still thirst after beauty, the most sublime, the purest
beauty of all, the beauty of mountains.
