How long is it since you
heard the sound of burning-bright Mediterranean sunshine? When did you
last listen to the colour-splashed beaches of a blue-bordered Spanish
bay? Have you ever let your ears take in the magnificent beauty of a
Latin girl's flowing black hair? Do you long to hear again the panoramic
splendour of a luxuriant Italian valley? These and a hundred more audio
pictures will leap out at your ears, grasp the attention of your mind's
eye, conjure up past memories and future dreams, when you play this
irresistible new Mantovani programme, Latin Rendezvous.Despite the
otherwise comprehensive range of available Mantovani recordings, this is
the first time the world's most popular orchestra has turned its
attention to the music of Southern Europe's Latin countries. Those'
persuasive, cascading strings which have swept through the melodies of
tender lullabies, haunting screen themes and so many other different
types of instrumental compositions take on a fresh role in Latin
Rendezvous. Here they help to create atmospheres of fierce brilliance,
sultry warmth, dramatic intensity and breath-catching beauty. Latin
Rendezvous comprises twelve best-known Latin tunes set in rich
arrangements, played with that remarkably high standard of precision
which we have come to
expect from the musicians of Mantovani's orchestra. This album came about
as a result of a competition Organised in America by London Records, the
Decca-owned label which releases Mantovani's recordings on the far side
of the Atlantic. American
collectors were invited to submit a programme-title and a list 'of tunes
which had never been included in the many pre-Mantovani records. The
response was exceptional and thousands of music lovers sent in their
ideas. The winner was Angelo Ruggerio of Nlilford, New Jersey, who
suggested that Mantovani should record twelve outstanding compositions
under the Latin Rendezvous heading. When the recording sessions were
scheduled in the early part of 1963, Mr. Ruggerio and his wife were
flown from New
Jersey to London where they met Mantovani, watched him at work upon the
Latin Rendezvous material, dined with their favourite conductor and
enjoyed an exciting sightseeing tour of the capital.
