Hi,
I really flipped when Gene asked me to write something for the back
cover of his new album. Being the International President of the Gene
Pitney Fan Club is something like heading up the United Nations. I
answer letters from all over the world asking about Gene and some of
them are written in French, German and even Japanese!
You all know what a great reputation Gene Pitney has as a song writer
and recording artist here in the United States, but I'll bet you didn't
know that "Hello Mary Lou," one of the songs he wrote for Ricky Nelson,
was in the top ten with 42 records in more than 20 different countries
... and his own record, "Only Love Can Break A Heart" was a big hit in
such far off places as Australia, Israel, and Hawaii. Italian, German
and New Zealand teenagers dug "Town Without Pity" and for a time the
Hong Kong set was swingin' with Gene's hit, "If I Didn't Have A Dime."
There's nothing greater than a number one record, no matter where in the
world it reaches the top. Gene has had a few foreign number one hits in
addition to "Hello Mary Lou." French kids saved their francs for Johnny
Hallyday's chart topper, "Garden of Love," penned by Gene and in Japan,
they had a big yen for "Louisiana Mama," which our boy sang as well as
wrote.
That's the way it is with all the sides in this album. Each one has
helped to launch Gene's star in another part of the world. After several
successful tours to the four corners of the globe, I guess you might say
Gene Pitney is really in orbit!
Sincerely yours,
Judith Lovendale |
