GIUSEPPE SCAROLA
is a tanned and muscular son of a boatman. For a good
many years, he and his guitar have entertained
tourists and Italian vacationers on the plodding and picturesque boats
which twice daily ply between Naples and the sunny Isle of
Capri.
Scarola himself was born in Capri, alongside the azure Tyrrhenian which
he has learned to know so well. As a child, a native
"guaglione," the young Giuseppe learned guitar and started singing for
tourists' coins along the Capri waterfront. Later he moved to
Rome to study music and voice with a Maestro Romeo. That led to his
professional debut in 1937, and to singing engagements not
only in Italy but in Berlin.
Eventually, the mature and highly personable Scarola returned to Capri
and there in his own "back yard" he has down through the
years become a jovial and talented "character" whose songs have been
heard by millions of travellers people who flock to the Blue
Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) to personally witness what many believe to be
the purest, bluest waters in the world.
"Slow Boat to Capri" presents, for the first time in Australia this same
entertaining boatman, Giuseppe Scarola, just as he presents
himself every day on the scenic NaplesCapri sightseeing run. The songs
he sings are all authentically Neapolitan and all were
recorded in Italy under the most advanced high-fidelity circumstances.
