The story of GIGLIOLA CINQUETTI reads
like a fairy tale! An artist of world renown, her meteoric career began
in her native Verona when she was eleven years old, and continued
steadily on its incredible ascent, establishing her position as an
artist of indisputable quality.
GIGLIOLA, who is just twenty-one years old, began her career as an
amateur with a certain professional style. Castrocaro, a small town in
Italy, has been the center of the Italian musical tradition for many
years, famous for its annual amateur festivals. These festivals are not
without considerable significance in the Italian pop song world, for the
winning competitor immediately gains the right to participate in the
most famous and accredited music festival in the world, namely the San
Remo Song Festival.
At fifteen GIGLIOLA presented herself at Castrocaro, winning first place
with "NON HO L'ETA" ("I'm -,Too Young"), and therefore the right to
compete at San Remo, where she again won first place, which in turn
gavé-her the opportunity of representing Italy in the International Song
Contest televised over "Eurovision," which links up the European
countries. Once again she won first honors, now for the third time. Thus
were GIGLIOLA CINQUETTI and "NON HO L'ETA" thrice awarded first prize
and thrice applauded by the European audience.
This was the only time Italy had won such a trophy, which is the
greatest ambition of all the best and most popular artists in Europe.
And so began the amazing rise of this young girl who, within a short
while, had sung in nearly all the major cities of the world, winning
fame and popularity for herself and more awards for the song in such
metropoli as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, Berlin,
Madrid, Rome, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Brussels. Athens, Belgrade, Lisbon,
Mexico, Rio de Janeiro, Caracas, etc.
The following year, 1965, she made a triumphant return to the San Remo
Festival with the song "HO llISOGNO DI VEDERTI" ("I Need to See You"),
this i<' i ne being placed third, but immediately winning the attention
of the radio and press.
With her third appearance at San Remo, in 1966, she once again won first
place with the song by Domenico Modugno, "DIO, COME TI AMO" ("Oh! How I
Love You") .
Final proof of the definite popularity of GIGLIOLA CINQUETTI—as if any
such proof were still needed—is the fact that the Italian television
devoted a weekly show to her talents, with the title "IO, GIGLIOLA."
She has been on singing tours throughout the world, which have brought
her such overwhelming response from the audience that, as she commented
during her recent visit to Mexico, "cannot be described in words, but
only felt with the heart."
GIGLIOLA was in Mexico City recently to cut an album with the TRIO LOS
PANCHOS, in which she recorded the most romantic boleros of Latin
America.
The prodigious fame of the TRIO LOS PANCHOS is a well-known fact in the
annals of popular music. All that need be added at this point is that in
this LP the wonderful voices and guitars of the famous trio join with
GIGLIOLA in producing a spectacular combination of musical talents. |
