We have been able to copy everything from
you Europeans — except Caterina Valente!" These laconic words of Japan's
film czar Watanabe stand for all the superlatives of enthusiasm with
which the outstanding triumphal tour of Caterina Valente through the far
East has been reported on. No matter, whéther before television cameras
with Perry Como in the United States, or on grand tour through South
America, or in the film studios all over the world, or in her own
television show "Bonsoir Kathrin'i or on starring tours in the European
capitals:
When Caterina Valente's voice rings out, when this delicate person
appears, who simply seems to explode with musicality, the leading
managers in the show business know that success, applause, and full
houses are on the way.
Because of this, there is today already a threat over each new Valente
song, over each new television show. over each motion picture If a new
record of "CATRIN" happens not to reach the number 1 position of
international hit parades at once then immediately the question springs
up.
What may have happened with Caterina Valente if a Valente television
show is just good and not as customary, revolutionary and epoch making,
the public as well as the critics are depressed. The same goes for
motion pictures. A Valente film simply has to bring 'sensational cash
results, despite film crisis and everything that goes along with it.
Good cash proceeds ONLY won't do with Caterina Valente.
How easily the term INTERNATIONAL STAR is used today. Caterina Valente
is one of the very few genuine international stars. The hard-boiled
American pressmen have named her the "Queen of the Show Business". The
temperamental Italians just call her "La grande Caterina". And on the
lists of the great international impressarios, stating the names of the
stars the public all over the world wants to see again and again,
Caterina Valente just keeps being Number One. How short are mostly the
careers of stars who come up over night? How many singers who were
brought into vogue through one touching melody, are now already
forgotten although only a few years ago thousands and thousands of
enthusiosits were applauding them Catrina Valente has never lived on a
hit. She has made hits. Since more than ten years now she is one of the
really great stars in the international record business. Under her
Teldec contract, she tours the whole world twicw a year. From success to
success. And her audience in one part of the world is annoyed because
they are of the opinion that THEIR Valente is neglecting them. In this
connection it will be permissible to use a commonplace phrase: Caterina
Valente's voice belongs to the whole world - and the year has only 365
days.
We should be grateful to have an international star like Caterina
Valente. Let us share this "Musica in Persona" with all her friends all
over the wórld. This now is a real delicacy for all lovers of records: A
long-playing record with her greatest hits. Many of the hits on this
record have been for weeks Number 1 not only in the German but also in
the Mid-European hit parades. With "Rosalie, musst nicht weinen",
Caterina won the first hit festival of Radio Luxembourg, and it seemed
just natural that in the year to follow she again received the gold
medal for "Der Sheriff von Arkansas". "Caterina beat them all" the
newspapers wrote. For Caterina won for most of the songs she performed
the first places in the competitions. A music publisher whose
composition did not win a place: "My song has just not been performed by
Caterina Valente. Catrin could just sing the telephone directory and she
would reach place number one of the hit parades with it!" |
