Liberace opens
the Hollywood Bowl concert with a tribute to Paderewski, the great
Polish pianist who has always been his inspiration. As a bow toward the
towering genius of Paderewski, Liberace presents highlights of both
concerts, consisting of a medley of magnificent Chopin works: the
"Minute" Waltz, the C Minor Nocturne, A-Flat Waltz, and the A-Flat Major
Polonaise, sometimes simply known as the Polonaise.
Continuing his programme, Liberace next offers a dual tribute to certain
aspects of American music, specifically hillbilly music, and
boogie-woogie. In the former, he sings an amusing new song called Hey
Liberace! to an appropriate accompaniment by the orchestra conducted by
his brother George, and then goes on with a dazzling display of
boogie-woogie technique that calls the whole audience into
participation, building toward a rousing close. Then, to show still
another aspect of American music, Liberace presents his famous
arrangement of The Rosary in a lovely and reverent mood.
One of the most outstanding and memorable occasions in any Liberace
concert is the moment when he calls for requests from the audience and
weaves them into a garland of charming melodies. At the Hollywood Bowl,
the audience responded with an intriguing series of requests, which
Liberace presents in sequence as the "Hollywood Bowl Concerto."
The result is a thoroughly entertaining programme, and one that captures
to the full the engaging personality and dazzling dexterity of his
playing. |
