MANDOLINS IN THE STARLIGHT - The
Neapolitan Mandolins of Eduardo Alfieri
In every artistical manifestation "tradition" always occupies the main
position. It is tradition which makes us familiar and
allows us to re-evoke the expressions of the people to whom they
belonged.
The aim of this LP is to reflect as faithfully as possible the
neapolitan folklore through the choice of those songs in which,
according to us, the melody reflects the genuine expression of the soul.
The mandolin, with its vaste range from sorrowful accents to vivid
tones, from dramatic impetus to trills and "staccatos", is
the best interpreter of these songs.
Well-known authors like Salvatore Gambardella, E. A. Mario and others
used to compose their songs directly for the
mandolin without availing themselves of a harmonic game which could have
impaired the clarity of their songs.
The famous Gennaro Pasquariello used to say that to sing a song two
attributes were needed: "a small voice but a very big
heart". In the case of this LP the "small voice" may be represented by
the simplicity of the mandolin and the "very big heart"
by these great melodies. Eduardo Alfieri, young and well-known director
of the orchestra, has taken care of these recordings
with extreme affection, confirming once more the continuity of an
immortal tradition.
Being a composer himself he has given in the arrangements of each title
the maximum emphasis to the musical intentions of
the authors.

In ogni manifestazione artistica la tradizione occupa sempre un posto di
grande importanza. Essa, infatti, ci fa conoscere o
rivivere quelle che sono le espressioni del popolo cui appartengono. Nel
realizzare questo miscrosolco il nostro scopo è stato
quello di rispecchiare il più possibile il folklore partenopeo
attraverso una selezione di canzoni che, secondo noi, meglio si
prestavano a far rilevare come la melodia possa essere l'espressione
genuina dell'animo.
Lo strumento che meglio interpreta queste canzoni, ora con accenti
accorati, ora con toni vivaci, ora con slanci drammatici,
ora con trilli o staccati, è il mandolino.
Infatti, autori famosi quali Salvatore Gambardella, E. A. Mario ed altri
componevano direttamente sul mandolino senza
avvalersi, quindi, di un gioco armonico che avrebbe potuto alterare la
nitidezza del loro canto.
Il celebre Gennaro Pdsquariello diceva, appunto, che per cantare una
canzone ci vogliono due cose: « "dduie solde 'e voce" e
"mille lire 'e core" ». Nel nostro caso: "dduie solde 'e voce"
potrebbero essere rappresentati dall'espressione semplice dei
mandolini e "mille lire 'e core" da queste grandi melodie.
Eduardo Alfieri, il giovane e noto direttore d'orchestra napoletano, ha
curato can estremo amore queste registrazioni,
confermando la continuità di una immortale tradizione.
Egli, essendo un affermato compositore, nell'arrangiare i brani inclusi
in questo microsolco ha dato il massimo rilievo al
pensiero musicale degli autori.
Ci auguriamo che questa nostra fatica trovi il gradimento del grande
pubblico della canzone napoletana.
