The exciting tenor voice of
Nicola Filardi has already brought "Bravos!" from opera lovers all over
the western world; from La Scala, Milan to Covent Garden
and the U.S.A. Favourable notices in newspapers from Germany, France,
Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Austria and South America are scattered
throughout his
personal scrapbook. In fact, to glance through this enormous book is to
find Nicola's name on the same Bill as nearly every great operatic
artist of today.
Here is an artist of world wide repute who sang four seasons at Monte
Carlo, appeared in leading roles with Maria Callas in Sicily and later
in the U.S.A.,
with Renata Tebaldi in Florence; Tito Gobbi at Covent Garden; Jean
Madeira at the Vienna State Opera (with Herbert von Kara.jan and Pierre
Monteux
conducting). In 1960 he sang with Joan Sutherland at Glyndebourne and at
the Edinburgh Festival. A year later he starred in the "Tales of
Hoffman" at La
Scala, Milan. 1962 saw him at the Rome Opera House playing the leading
role with Renate Tebaldi in a contemporary opera by Cilea — "Adriana
Lecouvreur". After a season in Australia in 1962 for the Elizabethan
Trust Opera Company, Nicola made a decision. He brought his charming
wife and two
children to Australia and made a new, permanent home for them
overlooking part of Sydney Harbour.
But when Nicola first decided to make Australia his home, his plan was
to retire from singing; however, this was not to be. For here was an
artist at the peak
of his career. (In 1962 he was awarded "La Perla Verde", the Italian
'Oscar', as the most popular operatic artist of the year). His voice was
in demand so what
was he to do?
But Nicola wanted a new challenge. Like many other great singers he
began to delve into the world of more popular music (but without
forsaking Opera
completely). Now, Australian audiences, even though they may not be
opera fans, are able to enjoy Nicola Filardi's voice when he appears on
TV or in
Cabarets and Nightclubs.
All of which brings us to this superb recording of songs which everyone
knows; Neopolitan Folk Songs, Evergreens and one or two 'big ones' from
recent Hit
Parades. They are sung with the perfection which a great artist of
Filardi's calibre always demands of himself. As he will tell you; "I
love to sing. But I have
to sing well. I do not only strive to please my own ear, but to please
my family, who are more critical than any audience or any newspaper".

remains today in excellent preservation, almost .as it wes when built by
Wentworth in 1830. Vaucluse House is one of Australia's cherished
historical possessions and is preserved as a memorial to William Charles
Wentworth and of the times in which he lived. |
