FRANCO BROZZESI A
name already widely known to Australian music lovers, a tenor of
extraordinary versatility and tonal quality.
Franco Brozzesi, an Australian citizen of Italian origin, born in Marino
on the outskirts of Rome, has studied music and singing under Italy's
leading
teachers, including Professor Tinarelli Scapini to whom much of the
credit for Brozzesi's style and beauty of voice must go. Franco Brozzesi
has been
acclaimed in his native Italy and Europe for his fine singing.
Since settling in Australia in 1956, he has matured to an artist of the
highest standard. On his arrival in Sydney that year, he joined the
Elizabethan
Trust Opera Company and gained for himself the appreciation of audiences
in the capital cities and country towns throughout the Commonwealth for
his interpretation of leading tenor roles.
His debut was as Luigi in Puccini's opera II Tabarro. He also sang the
roles of the Duke in Verdi's Rigoletto, Alfredo in La Traviata, and
Fenton in
Falstaff.
He sang at many concerts with the Australian Broadcasting Commission and
the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and has done great work singing at
many concerts organised for charity.
Franco Brozzesi pays tribute to the late Beniamino Gigli by singing on
this RCA record those arias and Neapolitan songs that made Gigli so
famous.
JOSEPH KHASHO Arranger and Conductor. An
Australian of Arabic extraction, Joseph Khasho earned for himself a
formidable musical reputation
throughout the Middle East before coming to Australia to settle in 1955.
A pupil of the renowned Professor Agostino Lama, Khasho was organist at
the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, and teacher of music at Terra Santa
College, Jerusalem, and at Aleppo, Syria. He combined these appointments
with regular concerts and broadcasts, writing the arrangements Ibr his
own
choir and orchestra.
It was at the Elizabethan Trust Opera Company's production of Rigoletto
that Khasho first heard Brozzesi sing and was immediately impressed with
the
quality of the tenor's voice. Here, he knew, was a voice one hears
rarely in a lifetime: a voice of expressive fervour and versatility
combined with deep
musical feeling. He determined then that the voice of Franco Brozzesi
must become more widely known and appreciated by Australian music
lovers.
This record is the result.
However, it was not until several years later that he was able to put
into effect his plan of combining with Brozzesi to produce this LP. In
the meantime
he had become Brozzesi's accompanist and arranger, produced concerts for
him at the Sydney Town Hall as well as country tours, and featured him
as
soloist with his own choir, the Mosman Chorale.
After many late-night discussions with producer Bill Ramsay, the picture
emerged of what they would do: a programme of arias and Neopolitan songs
previously recorded by the late Beniamino Gigli. Brozzesi gladly
concurred with the choice, and Khasho began writing the original
orchestrations for
the disc.
The record is a great achievement in Australian recording history: a
fine art record made entirely in Australia by Australian artists. Full
credit must be
accorded Bill Ramsay for the sound quality of the disc, the result of
close co-operation with Khasho in interpretation and balance. |
